Margarita Hernandez is the Organizing Director for the Grassroots Institute of New Jersey and the New Jersey Working Families Alliance, where she develops and oversees the organizing and political campaigns, including their new leadership development pilot program. Previously, she was the Community Affairs Coordinator at Planned Parenthood of New York City, where she organized immigrant parents in support of a comprehensive sex education campaign in New York City and coordinated coalition efforts to establish funding for comprehensive sex education in New York State public schools. Margarita started her organizing career in 2001 at the New York Working Families Party, where she managed local political campaigns, supported campaigns to increase the state minimum wage and pass local living wage ordinances, build the WFP's membership base in New York City and trained and managed new organizers and organizing interns. In 2007, she participated in a six-month leadership development training for progressive lead organizers with Social Justice Leadership, a New York City-based training program, where she honed her skills in strategic planning, sustainability practices, leadership and management. Margarita is a graduate of Fordham University and was born in San Salvador, El Salvador.
