Marge Krupp is a 2007 Camp Wellstone alum who is running as the Democratic challenger to five-term Republican incumbent Paul Ryan in Wisconsin's First District. She is said to be the first serious challenger to Ryan in six years. The Wall Street Journal describes the race as "competitive," and according to the Madison Capital Times, "The 1st District contest is not the type that tends to get polled, but it could be this year's sleeper contest for Wisconsin."
A native of Racine, Wisconsin, Krupp is a chemical engineer and MBA who has top-level managerial experience with SC Johnson and Abbott Laboratories. She is familiar with her district's economic needs, having worked for area chemical processors her whole career, and has handled multi-million dollar projects.
Although she has risen to a top level in her field, she recognizes a strong middle class as being crucial to America's economy. She is running on a no-nonsense platform of strengthening the middle class, ending the war in Iraq, and resolving the nation's health-care crisis. She is also a strong advocate of the environment and would work to bring green-collar jobs to her district.
After attending Camp Wellstone in January of 2007, Krupp was inspired to challenge Ryan because she wanted a voice in Washington for middle class working families in her district. She gave a speech at the 2007 State Democratic convention, and won the Democratic nomination with 37% of the vote. She has received several major endorsements, including one from the Iron Workers' Union and NOW, and has raised upwards of $100,000 dollars so far. She credits her mother as the source of her courage and gumption. "Just like in the '70s, they said girls can't be chemical engineers, I said watch me," Krupp said. "People say no one can beat Paul Ryan. I say watch me."
