Prop 8 would eliminate the right for same-sex couples to marry in California (learn more about No on Prop 8 here) My job since getting to Cali two weeks ago has been to support 7 counties and their efforts to organize for Election Day.
Our primary objective was to be at polling locations to talk to voters as they walk to the polling locations. Our initial thought was that we would be struggling to get 10,000 volunteers on election day. What we found was that once you connect peoples' values to what is taking place politically in their communities -people are more inclined to become involved.
Prop 8 is about telling an entire segment of the population that they are "less than" and don't deserve the same rights that in reality should be given to everyone. Prop 8 would eliminate the right to marry for same sex couples and people believe it is wrong and unfair. In Orange County we thought we might be able to get 10 polling locations covered and instead, we are going to have enough volunteers to cover 100.
At a training last night to prepare for eday operations we expected to see 40 people and instead trained 140. This overflow of volunteers is happening all over the state. We expect to see 12,000 volunteers in the "streets" talking to 750,000 voters before we are done tonight.
