Hello, my name is Nick and I just signed up for the Wellpoint Activist track training in Oakland for July 30-Aug 1. I'd enjoy getting to know my future fellow classmates before our weekend training program. A little about me: I am a community organizer around housing issues with the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG). SVLG is a public policy business association comprised of over 300 members employers, mainly from the tech sector. Housing is a major issue for our members because of the high costs of living in Silicon Valley, and the effect this has on our members ability to attract and retain talent, as well as the implication for those working in the Valley but not earning enough to live here. My job is bring together organizations to advocate and spread the word at the grassroots level about smart growth and infill development. Silicon Valley will face an ever growing population in the years ahead, and in order to maintain quality of life for all residents, we need to begin planning for our future housing needs now. I am happy to talk more, and if you have any questions, just ask! Thanks, I look forward to meeting and working with you all!

Hi Nick! My name is Nicky. I think we have a friend in common, Shiloh!
About me- I'm a community college teacher at De Anza College. I'm a local elected official, serving on the Board of the Peralta Colleges in the East Bay. And, I'm active on the boards of two East Bay Democratic Clubs- The Wellstone Democratic Club and the Asian Pacific American Democratic Caucus of Alameda County. I've been an issue activist all of my adult life and learned a lot of what I know about politics from Paul Wellstone who was my college advisor, mentor and friend. In addition to fighting for community college access, civil rights, and peace.... this decade has brought me more squarely into the environmental sustainability movement which I view as the critical issue of our time. I have brought much of what I know about grassroots organizing to my classroom teaching as well as to my electoral work. I've helped organize 4 Campus Camp Wellstone trainings- three at De Anza College and one at Laney College this past February. Key questions for me right now are: 1) How do we set up the structures to support people (especially students) in long-term grassroots political engagement? 2) Once we win political office or some other structure of formal political power, how do we then govern or exercise that power in such a way that we can continue building the movement? I'm very much looking forward to meeting others at the Camp Wellstone training.
