Continuing Paul and Sheila Wellstone's commitment to Indian Country, Wellstone Action has created a new Native American Leadership Program (NALP), designed to strengthen Native American leadership and civic engagement. There is increased demand in tribal communities for training on organizing to address such issues as increasing jobs and opportunities, lack of political representation, inadequate access to education and health care, environmental challenges, and high rates of domestic and sexual assault.

Maralyn got her start in politics at the grassroots level, through volunteering on a local campaign in 2002 and has stayed politically engaged since. She joined Wellstone Action's Labor Program in 2009 after a tenure in Washington D.C. working at SEIU International where she was vital in developing two programs for members to run for office and lobby Capitol Hill.

In late July, the Cheyenne River Youth Project in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, hosted a special "Native Youth Organizing Training" in part with Wellstone Action.
One week after an historic Presidential election, the
results have been tabulated for more than 200 graduates of Wellstone Action
training programs across the country running for office in 2008. Of these candidates, 97 Wellstone Action
alumni won election last Tuesday in 24 states.
